About the studio

Two potters, one second-hand kiln, and a stubborn belief that everyday objects deserve to be made with care.

Kiln & Clay began in 2014 in a draughty corner of a converted textile mill. We had one kick wheel between us and a kiln we bought from a retiring potter two towns over. The plan was modest: make pots we’d be happy to use ourselves, and sell whatever we didn’t keep.

What we make

We work almost entirely in stoneware — a tough, high-fired clay that stands up to dishwashers, ovens and years of daily handling. Most of what leaves the studio is tableware: mugs, bowls, plates, jugs and the occasional vase. We mix our own glazes in small batches, which is why the same form can come out of the kiln looking a little different each time.

How we work

Everything is thrown or hand-built by the two of us. We don’t cast, and we don’t outsource. That keeps our output small, but it also means we know every piece personally — where the clay came from, how it was trimmed, and which firing it survived.

The classes

A few years in, people kept asking if they could try the wheel. So we cleared a corner, added three more wheels, and started teaching small evening groups. Watching someone centre clay for the first time is still one of the best parts of the week.

Visiting

The studio is open Wednesday to Saturday. You’re welcome to drop by, browse the shelf, and watch us work. If you’re after something specific, send a note through the contact page and we’ll see what we can throw.
